It seems crazy you can lose 7lb in three days on the Beyonce Master Cleanse.
But you can – and I did.
Be warned, this isn’t enjoyable.
Doing this lemonade diet for 10 days – which is the usual recommended time, would be difficult.
Anyone who has managed it must have a will of iron!
What is the Beyonce lemonade Master Cleanse?
The Master Cleanse is a modified juice fast, which allows no food.
All you can drink is a lemonade concoction made with maple syrup and cayenne pepper.
The Master Cleanse claim is the diet detoxifies the body and removes excess fat.
Stanley Burroughs developed it in the 1940s.
The regime also permits an Epsom Salts drink in the morning, which acts as a flush for the system, and laxative tea before bed.
The diet is usually done for 10 days.
For her role in Dreamgirls in 2006, Beyonce followed the regime, losing 22lbs, hence the nickname of the Beyonce lemonade diet.
Criticisms of the Master Cleanse
Critics, including nutritionist Jane Clark have pointed out the Master Cleanse has a deficiency of protein, vitamins, and minerals.
When doing the regime, you are consuming around 650 calories a day.
Individuals on the diet can get headaches, feel shaky and cold and dizzy, as well as nauseous.
They can also develop a white film on the tongue and have aching muscles as the body detoxes.
There is also the issue of loss of muscle mass.
The laxative component can also lead to dehydration and electrolyte loss as well as an impaired bowel function.
The reason I did it was to give my system a clean out after the excess of Christmas and New Year.
This was a good way of hitting the reset button in preparation to get back on my health and fitness regime.
However, because I like to exercise, I decided to do it for three days.
What happens when you do it?
The lemonade wasn’t as bad as I thought.
But by 4pm I was wondering how I was going to keep it up for one more day let alone three.
I also developed a pounding headache by about 8pm, which I suspect was due to caffeine withdrawal.
I woke up aching all over. I was also exercising while doing the regime – they recommend no more than 30 minutes light exercise, I chose an F45 class (if you want to read more about my amazing body transformation on the F45 training plan check it out here) which may have been an error!
However my stomach and digestive system felt lighter and better than they had for about four weeks.
I was also freezing cold, but the headache was slowly disappearing. I was also taking a liquid turmeric supplement, and magnesium to get things moving fast on the detox front.
I was heartily sick of drinking the concoction, but I could actually see a difference in my figure.
It was like all that wines, chocolates, and rich food and drink was slipping out of my system.
However I was still aching, and I had a white film on my tongue and a rather unpleasant taste in my mouth.
I woke up feeling a lot better, slimmer and with a flatter stomach than I have done in six weeks.
My headache had gone and I was no longer cold. However I was ready to eat. I had lost 7lbs – but I suspect a lot of that may have been water and also muscle.
My verdict is if you want to give your body a quick detox and look great for a special event then do it for three days.
However you would not catch me doing it for 10 days – I couldn’t manage it!
