Five reasons why coconut oil can help you lose weight and is good for your health

Coconut oil. Anyone who has even a teeny tiny amount of culinary skill will have noticed everyone has been going nuts for this stuff.

But why have there been some studies which say it isn’t good for your health?

I’ve been using coconut oil for a around three years and it’s my go to whenever I hit the kitchen.

Reports have suggested coconut oil is bad for health

Health professionals have had a heated debate on coconut oil in recent months.

Basically because it has a high saturated fat content.

However, this very component is what makes it heat stable. It means it doesn’t oxidise and cause cause cell damage. So what is good about it then?

In June this year the American Health Association issued an advisory report which led to a number of scary headlines suggesting it was “as unhealthy as beef fat and butter.”

However the report actually said not to STOP using it. Instead it recommended the average man limited the daily saturated fat intake to 30 grams per day and 20 grams for a woman.

That’s about the equivalent of 2 tablespoons of coconut oil for men and 1.33 tablespoons for women. That’s alot of coconut oil!

However the saturated fat in it can raise ‘good’ cholesterol

While coconut oil can raise LDL, or ‘bad’  cholesterol, it can also raise HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol levels as well.

Those smart folks in Brazil researched this, and they found that using extra-virgin coconut oil in your diet helps give healthy HDL cholesterol a bit of a bump.

Heart disease patients also saw a reduction in their excess body mass slimming their waistlines when they took it, which can help protect your heart.

Coconut oil stops you from feeling hungry for longer. How? It curbs hunger pangs, which of course in turn means you want to eat less, and then lose weight. Bonus!

Wouldn’t mind being on that beach eating that right now!

It can stabilize blood sugar levels. The MCFA’s (medium chain fatty acids) in coconut oil are sent directly to the liver where they are converted into energy and not into body tissues as fat.

This means it actually keeps your glucose stable, and in turn aids weight loss.

It’s rich in lauric acid which can help to kill harmful bacteria.

It can also nourish skin and can protect your hair from getting damaged. And that’s if you use it on the inside and the outside!

I don’t know about you but I am off to invest in a coconut grove pronto!
